With multiple wildfires currently burning in and around Northern Nevada, wildfire preparedness is especially important for Reno-Sparks residents.
The Bug Fire is active north of Reno between Cold Springs and the California state line, while additional fires, including the Freds Mountain Fire and Stallion Fire, have prompted evacuation warnings in the area over the past week.
For many of us who call Northern Nevada home, seeing smoke on the horizon is a reminder of just how quickly wildfire conditions can change.
And while firefighters and emergency crews work to protect our communities, there are steps each of us can take to be better prepared.

Create Defensible Space
Keep dry vegetation, leaves, branches, and other combustible materials away from your home and other structures.

- Where you would go if you had to evacuate
- Multiple ways to leave your neighborhood
- Where important documents and medications are located
- How you would transport pets
- What items you would grab if you had only a few minutes
Don't wait until an evacuation order is issued to figure this out.
Have a Go-Bag Ready
Consider keeping an emergency bag with:
- Medications
- Important documents
- Phone chargers and battery packs
- Flashlights
- Water and snacks
- A change of clothes
- Basic toiletries
- Pet supplies
- Essential personal items
If you have children or pets, make sure your evacuation plan accounts for them, too.
Smoke Is Also a Health Concern
You don't have to live next to a wildfire to be affected by it.
Smoke from regional fires can travel significant distances and impact air quality in Reno-Sparks and surrounding communities.
Northern Nevada Public Health issued an air-quality advisory on August 10 due to smoke from regional wildfires and recommends that residents monitor air quality and take precautions when conditions are unhealthy.
