Reno-Tahoe’s August Headliners: From Hot Rods to Rib Cook-Offs

August is just around the corner and brings with it several can’t-miss events to the Reno-Tahoe region. Whether you’re a longtime local, a new resident, or considering making South Reno your home, August is filled with activities for every interest. To help you make the most of these sun-filled days, we’ve put together a list of our top event picks for August. Mark your calendar and experience all that Reno-Tahoe has to offer this summer.
Hot August Nights (Aug. 1-10): The 39th Annual Hot August Nights returns to Reno-Sparks with a full schedule of Show-n-Shines, cruises, car enthusiast events, live entertainment, drag races, and more. This renowned annual event brings thousands of vintage cars to the streets of Reno and Sparks. Hot August Nights is one of the largest annual classic car events in the world with 6,000 officially registered vehicles 1979 or older.
Truckee Music Fest (Aug. 8-9): Head just west of Reno to the Truckee Music Fest for food, family, outdoor fun, and some amazing live music lineups in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. On Friday night, Jason Derulo, Big Bio, Maryjo, Local Anthology, and the Haze will perform. And on Saturday night, X Ambassadors, Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra, The Knocks, Gloomy June, and Black Sunshine will take the stage. The Truckee Music Fest will take place at the Riverview Sports Park in Truckee, California. Tickets are available online.
39th Annual Bowers Bluegrass Festival (Aug. 22-24): Three days of Bluegrass, Western Swing, Old Time & Folk Music at the historic Bowers Regional Park in Washoe Valley. This year's headliner is Nashville's Rebecca Frazier. Enjoy live music including National and Regional Bluegrass Bands, camping, workshops, vendors, food trucks, kids' activities, and more. Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off (Aug. 27 - Sept. 1): Some of the top BBQ teams in the nation will come together in Sparks to compete for a chance to claim nearly $20,000 in prize money and earn coveted bragging rights! The festival draws an estimated 350,000-400,000 visitors each year. Over 250,000 pounds of mouth-watering ribs are served throughout the 6-day event, which takes over more than six city blocks in Sparks' Victorian Square. Come for the ribs and also check out the arts and crafts vendor show, kids area, VIP area, and top-name entertainment performing on two stages.
Additional events and activities to put on your list in August include the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Reno Aces Baseball at Greater Nevada Field, and Food Truck Fridays.
