December is here and with it comes a season of joy, festivities, and holiday-themed events that capture the spirit of the Christmas Season. In this blog, I will highlight some festive family-friendly events around the beautiful Truckee Meadows this December.
The A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Philharmonic bring you the holiday classic, The Nutcracker at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts located at 100 S. Virginia St. This year’s performances are Dec. 20 at 8 p.m., Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Dec. 22 at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. To purchase tickets please visit pioneercenter.com.
Fun for the entire family, Christmas on Ice is bound to get you into the holiday spirit with world-class synchronized skating and free-style skating, dazzling costumes, a talented cast of singers, and a high-kicking chorus line. Non-stop fun, Christmas on Ice is perfect for the entire family. The show is at the Eldorado Resort Casino at THE ROW with performances Tuesday through Saturday until December 29. The Grand Sierra Resort invites you to celebrate the holiday season with Santa’s Epic Holiday Show. This high-energy cirque show is perfect for the entire family and features acrobats, daredevils, and performers. The show also features holograms, projection mapping, and interactive lasers. The annual Sparks Hometowne Christmas festivities return on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7. The annual tree lighting ceremony will be held Friday, Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. next to the large gazebo on the corner of Victorian Avenue and Victorian Plaza Circle. Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson will light the city’s permanent living Christmas tree, a 60-foot blue spruce, and will be joined by Sparks City Councilmembers and Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan.
The Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade is a festive tradition that kicks off the holiday season with marching bands, costumes, animals, floats, and more. The parade begins Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. and travels east to west on Victorian Avenue from Pyramid Way to Victorian Plaza Circle. More details are available on the City of Sparks website.
In addition to the city-sponsored events, 39 North is hosting its annual 39 North Pole at Victorian Plaza, in front of the Galaxy Theatre on Victorian Avenue. The event brings together food trucks, entertainment, holiday light displays, and a craft fair in a heated vendor tent. Learn more here.
Throughout December, Virginia City hosts several Victorian-style holiday celebrations. There is something for everyone including visits with Santa, holiday performances, unique train rides including the V&T Candy Cane Express and Electric Holiday Train O’ Lights, a Magical Christmas Fireworks Show, a Christmas Drone Show, and more.
