Some of my favorite hobbies include mountain biking and hiking. And I love to get out and explore all that Reno and the surrounding area has to offer. Luckily, the Truckee Meadows and Sierra Nevada Mountains offer numerous trails to explore. One of my favorite trails in South Reno is the Dry Pond Loop. This trail offers an adventure that combines the natural beauty of the Sierras with a touch of rugged terrain. Frequented by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, the Dry Pond Loop offers a truly scenic and peaceful escape.

A Trail Overview

The Dry Pond Loop is a scenic and challenging trail that is approximately 6.2 miles round-trip and has 1,000 feet in elevation gain. It’s considered moderate in difficulty, with a few uphill stretches that will get your heart pumping and provide some stunning views. You can expect to see hikers, bikers, and horseback riders on the trail. Please be sure to yield appropriately and communicate with your fellow trail explorers. The trailhead is conveniently located off Mount Rose Highway and directions to parking for the start of the trailhead can be found online

What to Expect

Scenic Beauty

The trail winds through pine and aspen forests, providing a cool, shaded canopy that’s perfect for a summer hike. Both Whites Creek and Thomas Creek run alongside the trail in many spots.

The Pond Experience

True to its name, Dry Pond doesn’t have water for most of the year, especially in the late summer and fall. Instead, what you’ll find is a peaceful, open area that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The absence of water doesn’t detract from the Dry Pond's beauty; instead, it provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the high-desert landscape and the changing landscape and colors of the seasons.

Wildlife and Flora

One of the highlights of the Dry Pond Loop is the diverse wildlife and plant life you’ll encounter. Keep an eye out for various bird species, including hawks and songbirds. As the weather starts to cool the aspen groves bring a beautiful pop of fall colors to the trail. And if you’re hiking in the spring, you might be lucky enough to spot some early wildflowers blooming. The trail is also home to a variety of small mammals and insects that contribute to the vibrant ecosystem. Larger animals like bears are out there too but rarely make an appearance.

Tips for the Trail

  1. Timing is Key: Hitting the trail in the early morning or late afternoon is ideal to avoid the midday heat. The cooler temperatures also make for a more comfortable trek. Setting off earlier in the morning or later afternoon also has the potential for the trail to be less crowded.

  2. Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes are recommended, as some sections of the trail can be rocky and uneven. Good footwear will help ensure a safe and enjoyable hike.

  3. Be Prepared: Bringing water and some snacks is always a good idea. Staying hydrated and energized will make the experience more enjoyable.

  4. Weather Considerations: Check the weather forecast before heading out. The trail can be affected by seasonal weather patterns, so be prepared for changing conditions, especially in the winter or early spring when the trail can be muddy or snowy.

  5. Leave No Trace: Practice Leave No Trace principles to keep the trail pristine for future hikers. Carry out all trash and avoid disturbing wildlife or picking plants. If you bring your furry friends along to the trail, please be sure to pick up after your dogs and pack out all trash.

Why Hike Dry Pond?

The Dry Pond Loop offers a refreshing blend of natural beauty and tranquility. The trail is perfect for a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The changing scenery, combined with the chance to experience the high-desert environment, makes this hike a hidden gem in South Reno.

Dry Pond Loop is worth adding to your outdoor adventure list. I hope that you can get out there and explore one of Reno’s most delightful trails!
